Goal Setting
The 10-Year Horizon
Stop calibrating your future on the next twelve months. Pull the planning horizon out to ten years and the size of what is possible reorders.
The Promise
Stop calibrating your future on the next twelve months. Pull the planning horizon out to ten years and the size of what is possible reorders.
How It Works
- Picture the 10-year future in concrete sensory detail. Not "I will be successful." Where do you live? What does your morning look like? What have you stopped doing? What have you become known for?
- Reverse-engineer the milestones backward. From the 10-year picture: the 5-year midpoint, the 3-year horizon, the 1-year next step. Each milestone is a constraint check on the prior one.
- Let the long horizon reorder the short horizon. When the 10-year picture is real, this year's calendar looks different. Some commitments fall off. Some get bigger.
In Practice
The leverage of the long horizon is that it breaks down incremental thinking. A ten-year target cannot be reached by doing 4% more next year: the math forces a different category of decisions. The reorder of this year's calendar is the deliverable, not the plan document.
