The Momentum Model

The Promise

Stop treating stalls, slumps, and collapses as ten different problems. They are one problem, lost momentum, in three phases, and every way you lose it has a countermeasure you can pre-decide before it strikes.

How It Works

  • Locate the phase. When something stalls, ask which failure you're actually having: failing to begin, failing to continue, or failing to come back. The phase tells you what momentum needs right now: generation, protection, or rebuilding.
  • Name the obstacle and read off the method. The Momentum Map pairs each of the ten obstacles with one vetted method. You don't need to invent a response; you need to find your row.
  • Pre-decide the countermeasure as an if-then. For each obstacle likely to hit your current effort, write the pairing as an if-then and keep all ten on one page. The countermeasure fires under pressure, exactly when in-the-moment willpower is what's missing.

In Practice

Read one chapter of The Momentum Playbook at a time and each framework looks like a separate tip for a separate failure. The model is the legend that makes them one map. Identity work settles who is acting and planning work settles where the action is headed, and between the plan and the finished result stand ten predictable obstacles that all drain the same resource. Starting is where momentum must be generated, against inertia, fear and perfectionism. Sustaining is where it must be protected, against willpower depletion, distraction, inconsistency and burnout. Recovering is where it must be rebuilt, after the long middle, a moved destination or a complete collapse. Because the obstacles are predictable, the countermeasures can be written on a calm day, ten if-then lines on one page, and fire later under pressure.

Original to the Accelerate10x series. It synthesizes the ten chapter frameworks of The Momentum Playbook into one model.
