Goal Setting

The 25-5 Avoid-List

Turn the good goals that quietly steal your focus into an explicit list of things you refuse to touch, so the vital few actually get done.

The Promise

Turn the good goals that quietly steal your focus into an explicit list of things you refuse to touch, so the vital few actually get done.

How It Works

  • List broadly, then cut hard. Write the full set of things you want, then circle only the small vital subset that matters most.
  • Demote everything else to an active avoid list, not a someday list. "Later" lets good goals leak back in one exception at a time. "Avoid" closes the door.
  • Protect the few by refusing the good. When a below-the-line goal calls, the answer is a clean no.

In Practice

A reader with a dozen worthy side projects writes the top three on one list and everything else on an explicit avoid list, with one sentence per item naming which of the three it would steal from if it returned. The next tempting opportunity gets measured against that list instead of judged fresh each time.
