Personal Growth
Hope and Agency as Prerequisites
A goal set without hope is a wish; a goal set without agency is a fantasy. Both have to be present before any goal-setting machinery can do its job.
The Promise
A goal set without hope is a wish; a goal set without agency is a fantasy. Both have to be present before any goal-setting machinery can do its job.
How It Works
- Diagnose before refining. When a goal stalls repeatedly, test the underlying beliefs before adjusting the goal. Can you name concrete pathways? Do you believe your own moves will move you toward it?
- Build pathway-belief by surfacing near-peer cases. Real people, similar starting conditions, who made the move. Specific proof beats abstract proof.
- Build agency-belief by stacking small, in-domain wins. Agency does not transfer across domains; the wins have to be in the domain where the belief is missing.
In Practice
When a goal stalls repeatedly, the problem is rarely the goal's structure. It is usually a missing belief about pathways or about personal capability. Diagnosing which belief is absent takes minutes; refining a goal with neither belief in place takes years.
