Environment Beats Willpower

The Promise

Willpower runs out by evening. Your environment never clocks off. Engineer your surroundings so the desired behavior is the path of least resistance.

How It Works

  • Reduce friction to the desired behavior. Pre-load the environment so the right thing is one decision, not five.
  • Add friction to the undesired behavior. Phone in another room. Junk food on a high shelf. Social media uninstalled.
  • Design defaults, not exceptions. The environment should make the right behavior what you do when tired, distracted, or unmotivated.

In Practice

People who appear highly disciplined in a given domain usually have environments doing most of the work. The visible willpower is filling the small gap the design leaves. Auditing the environment before blaming willpower is almost always the higher-leverage move.
